Day 16: Alcatraz

Today was set aside for Alcatraz. Here's the view from the bus stop looking right at our hotel.

This is the view approaching Alcatraz on the ferry.

We walked pretty much every open area on the island and took the audio tour of the penitentiary. Here are the items we found of most interest in no particular order.

The "private" showers. ;o)

A typical cell.

An isolation cell.

"My" isolation cell (The autocrossers following this will understand).

The windows to the world in "D" (isolation) block.

The visitation area.

What's left of the Warden's residence.

The view of San Francisco.

The chiseled out vent for the 1962 escape.

The Golden Gate Bridge.

Vegetation. Supposedly the island was barren before being occupied.

The exercise court.

The prison as seen from the exercise court.

After Alcatraz we grabbed lupper on Pier 39 and took a cable car ride up to Union Square. Dusk, rain and low batteries kept us from getting any more pictures.

Tomorrow's official activity is a motorized cable car tour. We hope to do some walking and busing after that to see more of the sights.
