Day 22: Fairfield to Monterey

Our day started of with beautiful sunshine and warm temperatures. We headed east up I-80 for a few miles then turned north onto the back roads. We made our way up to CA-128 and cruised it through the Napa and Sonoma valleys.

It was a colorful and scenic drive along with some interesting driving but it wasn't as breathtaking as some other drives we've done this trip.

We saw lots of vineyards along the way, and there seemed to be wineries with "tasting" every other driveway but we elected to keep driving as we had some distance to cover.

We took a cut-off via Chalk Hill Road to CA-101 and headed south once more to cut through Oakland and San Francisco on our way to Monterey. Instead of taking the quicker route down CA-101 and across the Golden Gate Bridge again, we decided to experience a couple of the long, double decker bridges in the area. First was the John F. McCarthy Memorial Bridge

and then the 5 lanes on each layer Bay Bridge.

Crossing this way gave us a new view of San Francisco and some the the landmarks we were accustomed to. The Coit Tower ...

... and of course Alcatraz.

We crossed east to west through San Francisco and stopped at beach on the coast ....

... and then continued along CA-1

.... through Santa Cruz and on to Monterey. We checked into a Clarion Hotel and walked down to Fisherman's Wharf for a seafood dinner.

We'll be staying here for at least 2 nights and haven't quite decided yet on the order to view the sights in this area.
